“So much of travel is about food.
I love the exploration & freedom that comes with travel photography; new sites,
new smells & wonderfully unique foods.
Stephen’s work elegantly reveals where food and travel meet. In fact, his food photography progressed naturally from his passion for travel and travel photography. As he states, “So much of travel is about food. I love the exploration and freedom that comes with travel photography; new sites, new smells and wonderfully unique foods.”
Stephen’s professional portfolio is a healthy mix of both commercial and editorial work, as well as an ever-growing list of personal projects he somehow finds time to dedicate to when he’s not continually traveling for work. He instead chooses to use the opportunities provided him by his continuous commercial and editorial work to create personal work. For example, he will soon be going to Italy to shoot a cookbook for Rizzoli Press with a famous Italian chef. He’s decided to stay a bit longer and to create travel imagery of Venice, while partnering with food and prop stylists back in the states to combine his travel imagery from the enchanting town with imagery of Venetian delicacies created in his studio back home. His wife, a freelance writer herself, will accompany Stephen and write for the booklet. The final result will be approximately ten mini booklets about Venice, combining his food and travel imagery.
DeVries loves the collaborative nature of creating beautiful food imagery. He finds that bouncing ideas around a group of other creative people, whether it be stylists, writers or assistants only enhances the collective creative process. With a 1400 sq. ft. natural light studio in Birmingham Alabama, DeVries has a perfect environment to explore his creativity.
