O riginally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Brian Kelly found his passion for photography as a young kid in awe of the cityscapes he experienced traveling around the country as a perk of being the son of a commercial pilot. Continually fighting with his brother for the window seat, Kelly found himself transfixed by the metropolises of the country, struck by the enormity of it all coming from a small town. It was only natural that his first foray into photography was making architectural images and long-exposure night images.
Now a successful portrait photographer with an ever-growing motion portfolio, Kelly’s work reveals his signature emphasis on background, color, scale and texture defining each of his portraits. He believes environmental portraits tell a story and the more he knows about the subject, the better off he is to tell that story visually.
Brian has always been the type of photographer to embrace the challenges that the current and future trends in the market dictate. He was an early adopter of the importance of motion as a commercial and editorial photographer. He’s done many “customer testimonials” with Subaru as director and producer, telling the story of exploring the backcountry and the joys of owning a Subaru. He also has done many testimonials from customers of pharmaceuticals who have courageously battled disease and ailments. He finds this work genuinely inspiring, being able to honestly tell someone’s story while producing commercially viable work.
In addition to his already impressive portfolio of professional work, Kelly is an avid creator of personal work. He has found that his personal work resonates with clients in such a way that leads to the type of commercial collaboration he thoroughly enjoys.
